50 Jahre Bundestagsfrack - The Exhibition!

As some of you know, I am working with the administration of the German Parliament (‘Deutscher Bundestag’) for quite a while. Work in the “Plenary and Committee Assistance Service” involves not only the preparation and realisation of parliamentary events and special parliamentary meetings, state visits and international events of various types in Germany and abroad, it is also the 'home' of the parliamentary tailcoats.

Since November 2004 I was preparing for an exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the tailcoat to the German parliamentary system.
This work has finally finished. The exhibition is to be opened on 7th November 2005 in the famous Reichstagsbuilding.

Furthering the knowledge gained from this exhibition, I am comprehensively investigating and comparing political rituals and symbols in parliamentary everyday life, with an emphasis on the meaning and use of official dress worn during session of parliament. My research concentrates on comparisons between the German Parliament and particular examples of Parliaments of members of the Commonwealth of Nations. Thus my work focuses on the English parliamentary system from three different perspectives: a federal state parliament (The Parliament of Victoria), a city state parliament (Parliament of Singapore), and the original “Westminster Parliament” in London.

After initial contact with and visits to the Houses of Parliament in London and Singapore, I am currently planing to travel to Melbourne, Singapore and London in 2006, in order to obtain more well-rounded and practical insights into their parliamentary everyday work routine and its association to official dress in Parliament. For that I will leave Berlin on 18th of February 2006. So stay tuned for the development on this.

I will use the following space to collect some important information about the exhibition along the way:

MAR2006 - SEP2006
Furthering the knowledge gained from the exhibition abroad:

Parliament of Singapore
